Lucca

This past weekend, we took a short one night trip over to Lucca in Tuscany.  It is one of the only (if not THE only) cities to still have the original surrounding Roman wall intact.  The wall is HUGE and confines the entire city.  They have built a park on top of the wall so that you can enjoy walking on top of it for the entire 4km loop.  This was our favorite part of Lucca and the scenery was beautiful.

Lucca was full of churches and piazzas.  The whole city was built on Roman ruins and there is the outside wall of a Roman amphitheatre that was turned into apartments and shops.  You can still see the brick, though, jetting out through some of the homes which is really cool.  There was also a dance festival going on and we managed to catch a show!

Lucca was also full of great food!  We consulted our trusty Rick Steve’s guide to find a place to eat for lunch and dinner and both were fantastic.  We went to a small pizza and foccacia shop for lunch (where they had gluten free foccacia made from chickpea flour!) and Osteria Via San Giorgio for dinner.  There were many small chocolate shops that we visited during the day too, my favorite find being white chocolate and hazelnut brittle.  We had a nice, relaxing, and quiet time in Lucca.  Just what we needed!

On Sunday, we went over to Cinque Terre, which I will write about later this week!  Enjoy the Spring warm up! Ciao Ciao!
